Established in 2010 to provide a platform for greater visibility of professional flutists, while offering specialized career training and guidance, the Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition has given nearly one hundred artists their Carnegie Hall recital debut, while also helping them to build careers leading to greater visibility and awareness of their work throughout the world. Laureates of the Competition have gone on to become concert artists, work with major orchestras, and also teach at some of the world’s most prestigious colleges, universities and conservatories.

REPERTOIRE & COMPETITION RULES
Applicants to the Alexander & Buono International Flute Competition should present works from at least two (2) different periods. Repertoire for the Competition may be:

  • Solo

  • Flute Ensemble

  • Literature from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and/or Contemporary 

You may enroll in either the Solo or Ensemble classifications, or BOTH. You must submit a separate enrollment for each category and pay the separate enrollment fee for each application. In both the solo and ensemble categories, arrangements are acceptable. The music does not have to be memorized.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

  • Applications received after this date will be charged an additional fifty dollars but only if received before Wednesday, November 22, at 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time.

AGE DIVISION/CATEGORIES

  • Elementary School (ages 4-11 years)

  • Middle School (ages 12-14 years)

  • High School (ages15-18 years ) 

  • College/Adults: College students pursuing degrees in Music and/or those who have already launched professional careers.

  • Amateur Adults: Adults 19 years and older without professional degrees in Music

ENTRANCE FEE

  • $150

ONLY VIDEO FILES WILL BE ACCEPTED. 

  • We recommend any of the accepted YouTube video formats, such as MOV, MP4, AVI, WMV or FLV and that you upload the video file to a permanent file sharing service such as Google Drive, DropBox or YouTube.

  • Temporary file sharing (such as WeTransfer) is not recommended because the file will be deleted after a certain period of time.

  • You will be asked to upload your video and share the URL with us.

  •  For those of you who are submitting multiple tracks, please use YouTube to create a "playlist" and then submit a single URL/link to that playlist in your application. (See Create and Manage a Playlist on YouTube)

TIME LIMIT

  • There is no time limit for the recording, however we recommend 25 minutes or less as a means of demonstrating the full scope of your talents and abilities.

PAYMENT

  • Major credit cards are accepted. Payment is required at the time of application submission.

  • The full application and required information are available when you click on "APPLY NOW". 

  • Once started, the application cannot be saved for future edits.
